One hand, one heart

I feel like a lot of people don't understand why I believe that sexual intimacy is meant for marriage.

When I'm wearing a chastity/purity ring, I usually get asked if I'm engaged.  Well...yes and no.  I'm promising myself to my future husband, but he may not be around yet.  At least God hasn't clued me in on where I could find him (very funny, God).

It takes perseverance and dedication to uphold the sixth commandment our society today.  We are bombarded with sex from television, magazines, radio, music, literature/books, Internet, etc.  It's not as hard to stay pure in action, but it's extremely difficult to stay pure in thought.

We are encouraged to take part in this "disposable" culture.  "Love 'em and leave 'em."  Women AND men are treated as objects, as a means instead of as an end in and of themselves.  We are only cherished in the pleasure we can give another's body instead of being captivated by the person they are inside.

We are encouraged to act as animals.

Something struck me the other day.  A couple movies that premiered in the past few years stuck out in my memory because of the message they carried.  "No Strings Attached" and "Friends with Benefits."  I did not see either of the films, but just looking at the one-sentence description on IMBD tells how the story ends.  They end up falling in love with each other and the pure physical dynamic is not enough. Even though they're promoting a message of one-night stands and casual sexual relationships, they're really saying that it's impossible, because of how we are beautifully and wonderfully made, to act like an animal when we are destined for eternity in Heavenly purity.

I think this shows that even though we're trained to want casual, instant gratification relationships, we know that we're meant for more.  We deserve more.  We should be loved completely and totally for the rest of our life.

I want a man to love me as totally as Christ loved the Church.  I want that unity that forms two lives into one.  One heart.
